World Savvy should move from competition to club
February 25, 2016
Only last year did SPA disband the World Savvy student group, a cluster of students that discussed and presented current events, culminating in a competition where they would present a current issue to a panel of judges. A student group like World Savvy should be reestablished to fill the gap in world awareness study that has resulted. Students can gather information through their own means, but many people don’t have time to read a news source every day. Not many detrimental effects can come from SPA having a structured program to ask its students how news affects them and what they can learn from other people’s stories.
According to teachers working in relation to WorldSavvy.org, “90% of students have a better understanding of sustainability and other global issues.” Not only that but, “93% of students are more open to new ideas and ways of thinking.” Obviously, the benefits of this program not only affect how they learn about the world, but improve their ability to deal with issues outside of the classroom.
Taking the initiative to gather students within the SPA community to form a student group dedicated specifically to current events is key. Competition does not have to be a part of it, just the open discussion within our community. Not only will this action raise awareness within the school circle of what’s happening on a local and global scale, but it will provide an outlet for students desiring to discuss news the ability to do just that.
