French IV student Cerena Karmaliani got to know France in a new way by planning a trip.
“The project helped us learn skills to actually travel and plan trips and put French into use,” she said.
Like all of the French IV students, Karmaliani spent two weeks planning a three-day trip to France down to the last detail.
Students included what airports they would depart and arrive from, where they would have layovers, where they would eat, and more. Each student picked a small French town to visit as well as picked local attractions to sightsee to get accustomed to the landscape.
Karmaliani chose to visit Chamonix which is a commune near where France, Switzerland, and Italy meet.
“I would love to go there someday. It’s absolutely gorgeous,” she said.
Karmalani added that she learned key travel skills during this project and can’t wait to visit Chamonix in the future.
French IV student Laura Kimmel chose to visit Saint-Tropez, a town in the south of France.
Kimmel had visits to local museums and a famous Dior cafe on her itinerary. She learned to appreciate and get to know Saint-Tropez over the course of this unit.
“I really liked learning about things to do in Saint-Tropez; it’s a really interesting place and this project made me want to go there,” she said.
Aside from the vacation designing expertise they gained, students also practiced using French in the context of travel. The students wrote a journal that followed the itinerary they wrote, which included things like where they went, what they thought of it, and what they saw there.
They learned travel vocabulary words like suitcase (valise), hotel (hôtel), layover (halte).
Overall this project helped French IV students fall in love with a town in France and foster an excitement to use the language they are learning in a country it is native to.
