St. Paul Academy and Summit School is entering its second year with an ultimate Frisbee team after they formed last year. Seniors Cas Burr and Sam Matenaer have been working hard to keep the team alive, they are facing three challenges in recruiting people to join the team. The team’s first hurdle in the path to reformation has been that they have not been able to find an adult supervisor. Burr says this will not deter their hopes in rebuilding the team.

“Right now it is a student lead team so we just scrimmage amongst ourselves,” Burr said.

The second obstacle the team is looking to overcome is finding commitment from enough students so that they can coordinate practice on a consistent basis. Burr believes that the lack of professional supervision has lead some, who would otherwise would be interested in the sport, to question the legitimacy of the team.

“We actually like that the team is a little bit more laid back; we don’t really need a coach, we all know how to play the game, and we just want to get outside and play,” Burr said.

Burr is trying to convey the message that while their practices may not focus on running drills, the goal remains the same: to grow as a team. Burr says a positive of having a team with such a laid-back attitude is that the pressure of being the strongest or most athletic person on the team is less important.

“You don’t really need to be that athletically talented. As long as you know how to throw and catch, you should be okay,” Burr said. “Ultimate [Frisbee] is a really good team building sport and at the same time, a very good workout.”

Overall, Burr believes that the lack of supervision leads to some organization problems but at the same time, he feels that in the absence of a supervisor, the team will have more freedoms and flexibility to boot.
