Looking back, 2024 was filled with many notable athletic accomplishments and illustrated by unique sports stories. In the winter, three boys’ basketball athletes achieved the 1,000 point milestone. In the spring, boys’ tennis added a third straight state championship to their record, and in the fall, boys’ soccer accomplished the same state championship ‘three-peat’ feat. In addition to girls’ soccer making it to the state tournament, two individual athletes, Taylor Barkwell in cross country and Adele Gjerde in swimming, also competed at the state meet in their respective sports. Overall, 2024 was a momentous year for Spartan athletics, and to summarize these feats, the top five sports stories are attached below.
1. BVS completes ‘three-peat’ after decisive win over Lourdes High School -Caden Deardurff, Audrey Peltier, and Yassin Mokbel

2. Mind over matter: Boys baseball braves mental game despite tough loss to Kenyon-Wanamingo -Elizabeth Tuttle
They took a hard loss of 0-5, but remain positive, striving to develop mental strength this season.
3. Focus and unity fuel cross country team’s strong showing at IMAC Championships -Yassin Mokbel and Nora Mckoy
The cross country team finds individual and team success during their Thursday meet. The team finds their cool and boosts their energy with different pre-meet rituals and pep talks.
4. Maren Overgaard uses mantras to gain a mental edge in Cross Country -Nabeeha Quadri
Every sport has unique terminology, like words to describe different strategies or slang that only fans of the sport can understand. Cross country has something unique.
