The underdog blue team wins House Cup

On Monday, students and faculty gathered in the Briggs gymnasium for the third and final House Cup event. House Cup is a school event started by the Upper School Council at the beginning of the school year. The student body was randomly split into two teams, the blue team, and the gold team. There were three events, and the team that won would be rewarded with an ice cream social near the end of the school year.

The two teams, blue and gold, were giving stares from across the bleachers. After winning the first two events by a long shot, the gold team was confident they would walk out of the gym with bragging rights and an ice cream social on their belt.

The event on the 17th consisted of four games, all inspired by the popular TV show Squid Game. When asked how USC decided on that theme, Co-President Maryeva Gonzalez said “Tenzin originally came up with the idea, everyone was pretty enthusiastic about it. It kind of seemed like a big finisher.”

The first competition was Red Light, Green Light. This game seems pretty simple since all the players have to do is make it across the gym, but, this game adds a challenge. Players could only move after the host yells “green light”. If any player was seen moving after the host calls out “red light”, they were eliminated immediately.

The second game was Tug-Of-War. The remaining players from Red Light, Green Light were split into two teams and put on either side of an extremely long, bright yellow rope. When the host called for them to begin, both teams attempted to pull the rope in their favor.

After Tug-Of-War, it was time for dodgeball. The surviving players were once again split up into two teams and battled it out. A few missed throws and a few direct hits later, the final three stood tall.

Finally, the last participants standing had a face-off in Musical Chairs. Walking around the center circle of the gym to the beat of Squid Game’s main song “Pink Soldiers”, the intensity grew as the music kept playing for what seemed like forever. When it finally stopped, both players dove for the last chair.

After the last chair was snagged by Soren Mishra, there were mixed emotions on either side of the bleachers.

The gold team was stunned that they had just lost, and the blue team was rowdy with celebration. USC Co-President Tenzin Bawa announced the winner, and just like that, it was over. The blue team will meet for their ice cream treats on the 28th of April.
