Usually, people’s wardrobes have varying clothes in different styles or shapes. Choosing clothes to wear the next day can be tedious, but for senior Raven Glaser, it is pretty simple. Most of Glaser’s clothes have butterfly motifs, a reliable collection that started many years ago.
Glaser began wearing butterfly clothes at a young age. “I don’t know who gave me my first butterfly shirt because I was too young to remember, and my parents don’t remember either,” they said. At first, there was not much meaning to wearing the butterfly clothes, but wearing them almost every day gave Glaser a sense of familiarity. “I like wearing butterfly clothing. I find that it just feels very comfortable for me; it feels very familiar. So I kind of like having that routine,” Glaser said.
The flexibility of wearing the butterfly clothing is something Glaser appreciates. “I don’t exclusively wear butterfly clothing, but I do like having it in my wardrobe. I would also add that I think butterflies are very versatile, so you can get super colorful ones, more muted colors, or anything in between,” they said, “It never feels monotonous.” The latest additions to their closet were gifted by their mother last Christmas. “I was actually really happy about it because I’ve been complaining for a while that some of the clothing that I wear are, like, clothes from when I was younger that [still] kind of fit me, but I’m also growing out of some of them. And I was sad [about] the fact that I was losing them, and then I wasn’t able to find any new ones. So she spent a lot of time searching on the internet [to find some],” Glaser said.
The consistency with which Glaser wore the clothes became something that people used to recognize them. “I think at a certain point, people associated butterfly clothing with me, so it felt almost like it was part of my personality or identity. I think it was that combined with the fact that I never really stopped liking butterfly clothing, so I never saw a reason to give it up,” they said.
A habit or an interest that started when one was younger does not have to be something to grow out of. For Glaser, keeping their clothing consistent to when they were younger gives them comfort in a fast-paced, ever-changing world.
