Style profile: Pannier talks love of costume design, Etsy, and Tavi Gevinson
Could you describe your sense of fashion in three words?
Oh boy. I’ve tried to do that before, come up with three words that describe my style, but then I always sound too pretentious. I try to make it funny; I say my aesthetic is Oscar Wilde-core, which I guess it could be.
Where do you get fashion inspiration?
I take fashion inspiration from a lot of different places. There are some fashion bloggers, but mostly it’s just from what I see in movies, mostly older ones—not in a ‘I only wear vintage’ kind of way, but I’m really into costume design, so clothes that come from movies and shows really inspire me. But what I like and what I wear is very different, because I’m kind of lazy.
Specifically, Tavi Gevinson is the love of my life. I met her, recently, and started crying. I was trying to say something cool, and I just started crying, and she asked me if I needed a hug. I said okay, and it was the best day of my life. She’s the main person I follow for inspiration.
Where do you get your clothes?
I buy a lot of stuff from Etsy, but also my mom’s hand me downs are a large portion of my clothes. I don’t actually buy a lot of stuff, but when I do it’s typically Etsy.
What’s your go to outfit—casual or dressed up?
Leggings and a sweater, pretty much always [is my go to] for casual. For dressy, it depends on the occasion, but I have this skirt that’s knee-length and pleated and I wear it with an oversize t-shirt, and it’s like, ‘Look at that contradiction; it looks like a school uniform, but with a giant t-shirt she stole from her dad, woah, that’s high fashion!’
What are five articles of clothing in your closet that you can’t live without?
My oversize blue sweater, black leggings, my Doc Martins, fun socks, and scarves, for my hair.
