Intro:
IKE OBI-WALKER: Welcome to episode (3) of 3. On this final episode of SPAtify. I, Ike Obi-Walker will be discussing the popular music genre rap. We interview the student body on their thoughts on our genre, and their favorite songs to listen to.
IKE OBI-WALKER: Originating from the hip-hop cultural movement, rap music originated in the Bronx, New York City, in the early 1970s and became part of popular music later that decade. Rapping developed from the calls made over the microphone at parties by DJs and MCs, evolving into more complex lyrical performances.
IKE OBI-WALKER: Popular lyrical artists like Eminem and Tupac Shakur quickly emerged from this sudden evolution in music. Ambitionz az a Ridah and The Ringer quickly helped these rappers gain the footing they needed to still be popular 40 years later.
[Audio Sample] – City on Fire, by K. Sparks
IKE OBI-WALKER: That was City on Fire by, K.Sparks Feat. Chel Strong and Es-K. If you would like to listen to more music by him, a link will be provided in the bio.

IKE OBI-WALKER: What do you like about rap music?
BOKII MULATAA: I feel like I just love the, you know, hip hop and the variety of, the different, beats, vocals, you know the emotion in the song, the emotion in you know the artist. You know. There’s always a story behind every song, and I think it’s truly expressed.
IKE OBI-WALKER: That was Bokii Mulataa a junior class in the class of 2026. He believes that emotions and vocals are what make rap music, rap. Without the story, a song holds very little significance. Even though not knowing the background and explanation of a song gives the listener room for interpretation, knowing for certain what’s wrong and what’s right allows the listener to truly bond with the artist creating the song. Trauma, happiness, sorrow, grief, and joy are all put into one song that is able to bond and flow together through lyrics, tempo, and rhythm.
IKE OBI-WALKER: Do you have any favorite songs?
BOKII MULATAA: Um, “Tried our best.” Is this only by Drake or not?
IKE OBI-WALKER: No, you can name any.
BOKII MULATAA: All right, tried our best. “Glue Song” by beabadoobee. “The Way Things Go” by beabadoobee and for certain, [music] by the PartyNextDoor.
IKE OBI-WALKER: Do you think liking Drake…Do you receive a lot of hate for it? You know?
BOKII MULATAA: I, got a little bit of backlash, but at the end of the day, it’s, it’s, you know, it’s me, you know, choosing to listen to Drake, because the serenation in his voice, and, you know, just everything that he says is just, you know, peak. You know, obviously, there’s some controversy behind what goes on in life. I know everybody has different perspectives online.
IKE OBI-WALKER: Do you feel like rap music is a big part of who you are?
BOKII MULATAA: Rap specifically, or just music?
IKE OBI-WALKER: I mean both, but like more specifically, rap.
BOKII MULATAA: Okay, well, I’d say rap is a big part of my life, because, you know, whenever you’re ever down or anything, you can just play a song, get piped up. But just adds different emotional states and different feelings anyone ever has, just play a song to match the energy, or, you know, lighten up the mood.
IKE OBI-WALKER: Do you usually listen to that type of music before, like a game or while you’re studying a game?
BOKI MULATAA: You know, I like to keep it calm, keep it classy. Found that out this year. But just listening to, like, a nice calm bead, you know, a nice try, like I said, try our best. You know, for certain blue song, whatever it is, just a nice calm bead to relax, ease my mind for the game. And yeah, but you know, last year, it was a lot of rap try myself like trying to get hyped up for every game. And eventually, just you know I kind of grew out of it, but yeah.
IKE OBI-WALKER: Alright thanks.
BOKI MULATAA: Of course.
