At 7 p.m. on Sept. 19, the Sparks swam against HumWow, a co-op between Humboldt and Washington.
“It’s not a super competitive meet,” captain Sophia Bietz said.
Despite competing in a relatively unfamiliar event, the 200 freestyle, Bietz performed extraordinarily and managed to snipe a first-place win. Although starting slower than the other competitors in her heat, she gained speed and finished less than one second ahead of the runner-up.
In only their second meet of the season, many of the swimmers competed in an average of three events, with several competing in events for the first time.
Bietz swam in one new event and two she was familiar with.
“I’m into three events and they’re not too bad. Two of them are relays. One of them is the 200 freestyle, which I haven’t swam before,” she said.
Out of 24 events, the Sparks team secured first place in 21; the team almost achieved a sweep of all events.
The team’s next meet is Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Humboldt High School, versus long-standing rival, St. Paul Central.
