Last year was a rebuilding year for the quiz bowl club. This year, they are back and ready. Room 4120 is packed during club time, with students ready to get their quiz bowl on.

Juniors William Hanna, Murray Goff, and senior Adam Ebert run the club.

In quiz bowl, participants answer questions from numerous subjects, including history, literature, general knowledge and math.

“So originally, they start out as […] toss-ups, pretty much it’s a question that the judges read out,” Goff said. “It’s a pretty long question, and your goal is to buzz in when you know the answer, so the first person to buzz in then can answer the question.”

If one gets a couple of questions right in a row, they can participate in a bonus round. Players will receive three questions from a specific subject in these bonus rounds. Overall, they aim to get as many questions right as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Quiz bowl team is more organized and competitive. There are league meets and state tournaments. At league meets, teams are not awarded points, but Ebert said, “League meets are fun.”

At local and national tournaments, teams are awarded points. One of the most prestigious of these tournaments is the ACRONYM. The ACRONYM tests on pop culture. Recently, it quizzed popular trends such as the Skibidi Toilet meme.

While quiz bowl can be played competitively, the club’s main goal is to get students interested in it and, eventually, get them to love it. This year, they plan on having two teams: a competitive team and a newbie team.

“We’re probably going to have one team this year grind out and try to win stuff,” Goff said.

The other team’s primary goal will be to have fun and build interest.

Currently, they practice during club time. Members run through and answer as many questions as possible to familiarize themselves with them. With the club’s rapid growth, the room is always packed.

Room 4120 is located in the Lower Schilling area past the stairs and the door directly in front. Clubs meet every other Tuesday.
