Pumpkin Spice: Fad or Rad?
October 27, 2015
In the fall you can’t go a day without hearing someone talk about pumpkin spice lattes and other pumpkin flavored items, but pumpkin spice is barely mentioned in any other season. Is pumpkin spice really as good as people make it out to be, or is it just popular because it reminds people of fall?
Pumpkin spice is available at almost any coffee house and other foods and fall items have tried to hop on the pumpkin spice bandwagon. Besides the normal pumpkin spice latte, there is pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie and pumpkin seeds that have been around forever. But in the past few years other food companies have made non-pumpkin items pumpkin spice flavored. Oreo has come out with a pumpkin spice flavored Oreo, pumpkin spice flavored Pringles and even pumpkin spice flavored peanut butter.
“I’ve tried a pumpkin spice Oreo, and it didn’t really taste like anything,” freshman Maya Orey said.
Some people just can’t get enough pumpkin spice, but others think it’s just a fad.
“I think it [pumpkin spice lattes] kind of brings back other fall memories. Just like in the winter when it snows or in the summer when it’s warm, it brings back memories” sophomore Ashley Jallen said.
Jallen has never had a pumpkin spice latte.
“It’s just one of the distinctive features of fall” Jallen said.
Many people think that the only reason pumpkin spice is so popular is because of fall.
“It’s just the right time of year,” freshman Nolan Gifford said, “it tastes okay, but it’s not something you would have in the spring.”
“It’s like the McRib, it comes once a year and people go crazy for it,” sophomore Daniel Ellis said.
Some people even believe that most people don’t even like pumpkin spice, and only like it because it’s fall.
“I only know like two people that genuinely like it [pumpkin spice]” sophomore Sylvie Schifsky said.
“People are just trying to be artsy for the fall” sophomore Amina Smaller said.
Some people on the other hand, love pumpkin spice lattes and think they are more than just an amazing drink.
“The most interesting thing about [pumpkin spice] isn’t that it tastes amazing, it also helps bring people together,” sophomore Adnan Askari said.
Askari posts a picture everyday during pumpkin spice season on Instagram with the hashtag psisintheair.
“#psisintheair is a way for me to express and really convey how much I love pumpkin spice” Askari said.
Whether pumpkin spice lattes are good or bad, they are a staple of fall life.
