[PODCAST REVIEW] Everything Everywhere Daily: history now
It’s hard enough to make a podcast, much less make it during quarantine. But that’s what Everything Everywhere Daily creator Gary Arndt did—and it was worth it.
Everything Everywhere Daily is a daily podcast that began in July 2020, created by Gary Arndt with Peter Bennet and Thor Thomsen as associate producers. It tells the stories of people, places, events, and things from around the world throughout history, tackling topics like science, geography, and culture. Each episode is approximately 8-14 minutes long and covers one topic, and as of March 18, Everything Everywhere Daily has 620 episodes.
Each episode is well-written and well-formatted, beginning with a catchy opener—a question, a hook—then the theme music rolling, followed by an introduction and definition of the topic. Ardnt’s factually accurate and intriguing explanation of a subject makes it enjoyable for all ages. However, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Arndt is no stranger to travel and history. A former resident of Minneapolis, Arndt is a well-known travel blogger and travel photographer. He has been traveling the world since 2007, visiting all seven continents and 204 countries and territories. Ardnt’s been named as one of the top 25 blogs in the world in 2010 by Time, a National Geographic Traveller Finalist for Travel Blog of The Year—twice, has three medals for Best Travel Blog by the North American Travel Journalists Association, and has earned 3 Lowell Thomas Awards—the most prestigious prize in travel journalism.
A must-listen for all history lovers, every episode takes you on an in-depth dive into the daily historical topic, always providing all the information needed to understand it, and ends with a catchy, gripping conclusion. Each episode is boiled down to the most vital information, with details sprinkled in through an explanation. The Who, What, Where, When, and Why of every topic are clearly addressed, making them easy to recall even after a period of abstinence. Take, for example, episode #598 on the Lindberg kidnapping. It provides the backstory on Charles Lindberg and Ann Morrow’s accomplishments, then moves on to the kidnapping’s location, time, and date, recounting the events in clear sequential order, ending with other theories and case’s impact today.
Something especially impressive is the ease you can jump in and out of listening—in fact, the episodes can be listened to in almost any order, and it’s just as pleasing to marathon a dozen at once or to squeeze in one. Perhaps even more relishing is the succinct and bite-sized episode lengths, perfect for a short, fifteen-minute car ride. Even better: the diversity in topics covered is sublime, ranging from The Byzantine Empire (Episode #1) to Paradoxes (Episode #489) to the Zimmerman Telegram (#Episode 236) to the legend behind Van Halen and Brown M&Ms (Episode #33).
Everything Everywhere Daily is a podcast for everyone, anytime, anywhere. Intriguing, concise, and unforgettable, the podcast inspires listeners to learn and understand more about the world around them.
