Following the end of the hockey season, the Drake Arena was opened up to the greater SPA community for an event called “Paint the Ice” on Mar. 4. Given the name, the ice was opened up for the community to come together and paint on the ice. Drake Arena rink manager Bryce Boreen said that after the Minnesota Wild seasons, they often will open up the ice to the public for similar paint-the-ice events.
Boreen was attempting to do something similar with the Paint the Ice event in the Drake Arena. “This year quite a few lower school families came out. Though the ice was open for all grades K-12, including all SPA community, and I was hoping for a bit better turnout for older students and families.”
Boreen hopes that next year the event will receive greater publicity prior to it happening and to cover the ice fully in paint. Paint the Drake is open for a couple of hours after school and is an open house event. SPA community members including alumni, teachers, older students, and parents all are welcome and encouraged to show up even if just for a short period of time.
