On an extremely cold and bitter Tuesday afternoon on Feb. 4, the Nordic team had their section competitions and put on an impressive performance. Both the girls and boys teams showed up and left everything on the track.

The annual section meet for Nordic skiing was filled with excitement as skiers from across the metro hoped to qualify for the upcoming state meet. Hundreds of racers gathered at Battle Creek Recreation Center on the cold morning to prepare for a full day of single and group events. The entire season had been leading up to these races and was every skiers chance to make the leap and qualify for state to compete on an even larger stage. Our team did not disappoint and pulled off a great performance.
Captain Inga Wing had an outstanding performance. She finished the day as new IMAC sections conference champion in girls Nordic along side Maren Overgaard in relay. The entire girls team did extremely well. The Spartans girls team sent nine racers to state. Among those were racers like Eleanor Mody who finished in third, Paloma Good who finished ninth, Alyda Overgaard placed tenth, and Elisabeth Hilton placed nineteenth.
“It was really fun, I am really proud of how all the girls did, the guys also did really well,” said Wing. “The boys qualified for state for the first time since I have been a part of the team, and overall, I am really proud of how we did as a team an I am excited for state.”

As for the boys, there was no shortage of impressive performances either. The relay team consisting of first-year Darien Hull and sophomore Sam Hilton qualified for state.
“I am really happy with how we did,” said Hull. “I’m proud of us and excited for the next race.”
The Spartans will be competing at state on Wednesday and Thursday at Giants Ridge.

Just to clarify, the girls’ team actually won the section meet, which has been dominated by the Highland girls’ Nordic team for many years, and sent nine girls to state, not just three. Maren and Inga were on a relay together, and they won the relay, so they were both champions, and Eleanor had a third-place finish in the pursuit. Paloma Good finished ninth, Alyda Overgaard was tenth, and Elisabeth Hilton finished nineteenth.
