New Instagram logo fails to impress

The new Instagram logo is not visually appealing, combining too many colors and shadows to achieve its goal of simplicity.

Since 2010, the Instagram logo has been an iconic symbol of the photo sharing app. Six  years later, Instagram switched to not only a new logo, but also a new design for the app itself. Instagram’s companion apps Boomerang, Layout, and Hyperlapse were also redesigned.

The new logo fits in with the camera and photo album apps that come pre-programmed on the iPhone, but this takes away from the app itself. The lack of visual appeal of the logo sticks out right away. The previous logo had a standout design that was easily recognizable in comparison to the Photo Album and Camera Roll apps. While the new rainbow background may catch the eye, the look is less sophisticated and hard to like. Combining too many colors, shadows, and gradient takes away from its goal of simplicity.

The new layout is all about minimalism- the all white background when the app is opened aims to put the focus on the photos rather than anything else. Although it is a sleek look, the lack of the classic Instagram layout is hard to get used to, especially for avid Instagram users who check the app every five minutes, but the layout it is not as blatantly unappealing as the logo itself.
