Movies for the Macabre: 5 Movies for Halloween
Many high school students have stopped trick-or-treating by now. To those of you who will be: have fun and stay safe. But, to the students who just buy a mask at Walgreens for Halloween: your money is probably better spent on buying a variety bag of candy and renting a scary movie for the night. So here are five that are worth watching:
5. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
…the original one of course, this movie will cause you to stay awake for a couple nights. With a movie that specializes in making sure you won’t fall asleep, it is a classic scary movie that was good enough for a remake. Also, Freddy Krueger, the razor-fingered murderer of the movie, will be ingrained into your mind forever—if he hasn’t been already. “One, two, Freddy’s coming for you.”
4. Psycho
Ok, anything by Alfred Hitchcock could be on this list, but this movie is the best. This movie has some of the most famous shoots in movie history. It gives; you an idea of where most scary movies have been based off of to date. Watch this to see the master of suspense work his movie magic.
3. The Shining

“Heeeeeeerrrreee’s Johnny.” Another famous director, Stanley Kubrick, delivers in creating a fantastic horror movie. When a family travels to the Overlook Hotel, for the father to take a job as a winter caretaker, built on a Native American burial ground of all things, things start to become scary when they begin to suffer from cabin fever.
2. The Exorcist
Anything with small children being possessed by a demonic force should be considered scary. This older psychological movie will get you to think about more powerful beings. It will make you feel bad for the child’s misfortune of being possessed in the movie, and you may just start to believe in demons.
1. The Silence of the Lambs
This is probably the best acted movie of the five which also has a lot of scary scenes. With heavy hitters like Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, the movie is bound to be fantastic. Two, there are two, not one, insane killers in the movie. Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter is amazing in the role—even if he is a cannibal. “It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again.”
