[MOVIE REVIEW] Levine’s Long Shot is a sure thing

Fair use from the Lionsgate website for Long Shot

Rogen and Theron are complete opposites, but they form a perfect couple.

Long Shot is a romantic comedy that follows a strong-minded journalist who quits his job at a newspaper and starts writing speeches for his childhood crush, who is an up and coming female presidential candidate. The odd coupling makes for a perfect mix of romance and comedy as the viewer follows their journey throughout their relationship.

Directed by Jonathan Levine, who also directed 50/50 and Snatched and written by Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah, Long Shot is a quality film for the writing that causes laughs and poses important questions throughout the movie.

The movie follows all of the hilarious and heartwarming ups and downs of the main character Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen). Rogen, although normally not thought to be an actor for romantic movies, adds an aspect of heartwarming and dopey comedy to the movie, which is perfect for making Long Shot a not so ordinary romantic movie but a hilarious rom-com. The movie, although comedic, also introduces the idea how one should change– if at all. Rogen’s character portrays this by never bending to another’s will and encouraging others to do the same throughout the film.

The movie also takes a dive into the campaign trail of Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron). Theron is perfect for the role by showing herself as a seemingly perfect and put together person as her life is spinning around her while she has to stay composed. Theron’s character is also the perfect role model for everybody in the film, and her strength and determination lead to more and more of her personality and humility being shown throughout the movie.

The characters bond quickly because of their backstory and childhood history that make their relationship not seem too sudden, but rather a match that should have happened ages ago. Theron’s character and Rogen’s character work perfectly together because of their completely opposite personalities that match perfectly together. Their relationship seems authentic because the watcher is able to see the good and bad times of their relationships that allow for the heart warming moments to seem even more real.

The cast is also full of secondary characters that add a new level of hilariousness to the comedy. Ravi Patel, who plays Tom and June Diane Raphael, who plays Maggie Millikin, are perfect influences for Theron’s character as well as being the biggest doubters of their relationship. The two are perfectly witty and teach Theron’s character a lot about love and support. O’Shea Jackson Jr., who plays Lance, Fred’s best friend, is a perfect partner to Rogen as the two play perfectly off each other’s characters by constantly egging each other on. Jackson’s character also teaches Rogen’s character a lot about not making assumptions, and instead, hearing people out.

Although the movie is sweet, the idea that anything in the movie would happen is outlandish. Between the crazy coincidences and the only ideal situations to bond, the relationship in the movie seems a little too flawless.

Between the cast and storyline, Long Shot is an excellent movie for anybody who likes romantic comedies and anyone who enjoys movies with all-star casts.
