IC celebrates students of Asian heritage through food and drink

Junior Olivia McCauley stands on a chair and gives a short speech about how happy she is to have had the celebration this year.

Dumplings, egg rolls, fried rice…the smell of Asian food wafted through the halls of the humanities department at St. Paul Academy this past Thursday at x-period. Students gathered around a Harkness table celebrating Asian heritage by eating and trying different foods brought in by a variety of students. Junior Olivia McCauley first came up with the idea when she realized that there hadn’t been any events that celebrated general Asian heritage during her time at SPA. Through the celebration, she hoped to bring appreciation of Asian culture into the community so that the student body as a whole would have more visibility of the Asian population within the school.

“I think that is really meaningful to see that their culture is represented, scene, and appreciated by other members of our community. It was a really great opportunity to have more people exposed to Asian food and culture,”said McCauley.

It was particularly appreciated among students who wanted to have a taste of Asian food and drink. This tradition will be continued by Intercultural club next year.

“Absolutely, we are going to try to have it much earlier next year so that we can include people who observe Ramadan, have even more participation and expand the event into the courtyard on a day that is different than the freshman sound sculpture presentations,” McCauley added.
