Hommeyer and Skarjune advance to state tennis tournament
In an exciting three set Section 4A doubles final on Oct. 14, senior Amber Skarjune and junior Ella Hommeyer qualified for the state tennis tournament. The doubles duo defeated a team from Breck 6-1, 0-6, 6-2. The State Doubles Tournament will be held at Reed-Sweat Family Tennis Center on Oct. 23-24.
Girls Tennis Season Wrap-Up
After advancing to the second round of section playoffs, the girls varsity tennis team finished its season with a close 3-4 defeat against Mounds Park Academy at the University of Minnesota Baseline Center. However, some players advanced to the first round of individual playoffs. Senior captain Sheila Sullivan and seventh grader Alexandria von Tersch Pohrer advanced in the singles round, and the doubles teams of senior captain Bella Martinez and freshman Numi Katz and senior Amber Skarjune and junior Ella Hommeyer also advanced. After the first round of individual playoffs on Oct. 10, only von Tersch Pohrer and the team of Hommeyer and Skarjune advanced to the next round. All of these players won their quarter final games and advanced to the semi final games.The team entered section playoffs as the 2nd seed in section 4A, after the first ranked Breck. The Spartans beat St. Paul Humboldt High School 7-0 in the first round of section playoffs before their eventual loss to MPA. The Spartans finished the regular season with a record of 6-6. Before her section final match, Hommeyer said, “I know I’m lucky to still be playing because most tennis players are done at this point in the season so I’ll try to make the most of this opportunity.”
