[HOCO Day 6] Spartan soccer owns Saturday in 6-2 win

To conclude the busy week of fun and games the girls varsity soccer had a game on Saturday against the Hiawatha Collegiate Wolves. They also celebrated their seniors with senior night.

Starting strong early in the game, the GVS got on the scoreboard with a goal by forward Clare Ryan-Bradley in the eighth minute. Soon after the goal the Wolves got onto the scoreboard. Later into the game at the 22-minute mark forward Maggie Sampsell- Jones scored on a header sending excitement throughout the bench. At the 33-minute mark center midfielder Lucia Gonzalez scored with a penalty kick making the final score 3-1 at the end of the first half.

At the start of the second half, the GVS started to show true concentration and focus. The first goal of the half was scored by forward] Clare Ryan-Bradley at the 41-minute mark. When the GVS started to see their lead they decided to make a few changes. The usual goalie Natalie Waibel went in to play forward, allowing the usual center midfielder Lucia Gonzalez to play in the net.

Soon after the switch, former goalie Natalie Waibel scored a goal at the 56-minute mark making the score now 5-1. The final goal of the game was in the 69th minute by forward Phoebe Gottlieb. This was Gottliebs’ first goal in her high school varsity career, making the entire crowd cheer excitedly.

The final score was 6-2. GVS plays this Saturday against St. Agnes at Pioneer Park in Little Canada.
