Gruesome injury stuns college basketball fans

Devoted fans of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, commonly known as March Madness, have grown to love this tournament featuring joyous victory, heartbreaking loss and no shortage of shocking upsets. However, many onlookers were treated to the unpleasant sight of an especially ugly injury during Sunday’s Duke-Louisville matchup in the Elite Eight.

Louisville point guard Kevin Ware suffered a compound fracture while leaping for a ball during the second quarter. As Ware’s lower leg went out from underneath him, the break was dramatic and visible. Viewer Discretion is advised for anyone attending to find video of the injury.

Louisville players were openly weeping for their teammate. “Basketball teams are like family, and so it’s really difficult to see someone go down like that,” St. Paul Academy and Summit School senior basketball player Josh Gray said.

As Ware left the court on a stretcher, he could be heard telling his teammates, “I’ll be fine, just win the game.” The Cardinals, emboldened by Ware’s words, outscored the Blue Devils 50-31 in the second half en route to an 85-63 victory. Their next game will be against the #9 Wichita State Shockers.
