Last Friday, girls varsity volleyball swept a home game against the Hiawatha Collegiate Wolves 3-0. Prior to this matchup, GVV had been on a three-game losing streak, but the members were hopeful coming into the game. Outside hitter Naomi Mann said, “I’m excited for us to hopefully end [the losing streak] and kind of get back into our groove of how we’ve been, how we played the first six games this season.”
The first set started off rocky with the Wolves leading by three points. However, the Spartans were able to secure a 25-11 victory in the first set. Middle blocker Olympia Wolff was a huge component in the success of this team during this set having four kills. Right side hitter Nora McKoy was also a key player, having four aces.
The second set started off strong with a great performance by libero Louise Mahoney who had four aces, out of nine serves. McKoy also served nine times, again helping the GVV team secure a 25-14 set win against the Wolves.
In the third set, the Spartans secured the win 25-7. Mahoney once again proved to be a crucial player, serving nine times, hitting six aces and leading the team to a 3-0 win against the Wolves.
A great deal of supporters came to watch the game. It was middle school appreciation night, so there were many crowd cheers and laughter during the game.
GVV currently has a record of 6-6 and their next game is Saturday against Against Mounds Park Academy at Mounds Park.
