After achieving fourth place in the Independent Metro Athletic Conference, the St. Paul Academy and Summit School girls golf team headed into the playoff season with momentum. The team finished off their regular season at the May 19 meet at River Oaks Golf Course against Breck, Blake, Minnehaha Academy, Providence Academy, and Mounds Park Academy. Additionally, senior captain Annette Vargas received IMAC honorable mention.

“We had some of our players golf really well at that match,” sophomore golfer Kathryn Schmechel said.

While the team had began the season with some tough losses, they were able to improve their performance by practicing hard, according to Schmechel.

“We haven’t had a lot of matches this season, so we have had a lot of practice time, which helped us all get better,” Schmechel said. “I think we’ve all become better hitters.”

In addition to improving a lot throughout the season, the team has had a lot of fun due to good team chemistry.

“The matches have been really fun this season. There’s a really positive team environment,” Schmechel said.

The Spartans began section playoffs on May 26, as they compete in the section 4AA tournament at Highland National golf course. If they perform well, they will move on to the state tournament on June 9.
