Film Club: Playing for you
Film Club has been taking advantage of Netflix Party, now rebranded as Teleparty, to watch movies over various streaming services, since last spring and into the summer.
Here are Film Club’s weekly showings for the month of February, each with predominantly black casts:
Queen & Slim (2019) directed by Melina Matsoukas
Friday’s showing at 7 p.m. is Queen & Slim, a film following a couple, Queen and Slim, who shoot a racist cop in self-defense and from then on are on the run from the law and portrayed infamously in the media. Film Club will be watching via HBO Max.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020) directed by George C. Wolfe
Gertrude Rainey, otherwise known as Ma Rainey, was a blues singer in the 1920s, and one of the first professional black blues singers in America. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, whose showing will be held on Friday, Feb. 12 via Netflix, follows the story of Ma Rainey and her band in a white music industry.
Purple Rain (1984) directed by Albert Magnoli
On Friday, Feb. 19, the movie will be Purple Rain shown on HBO Max. Starring Prince himself, the film follows him and his band, The Revolution, and their growth and place in the music scene.
Black Panther (2018) directed by Ryan Coogler
The last movie on the month (Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.) is the iconic Black Panther. It will be shown on Disney+.
