Upper School fine arts teacher Marty Nash imbues the art wing with her intense dedication to and passion for the visual arts. She is both an artist and teacher in the truest sense with her artistic intuition and strong work ethic impacting the artistic sphere at St. Paul Academy and Summit School indelibly.

Nash’s personal work is currently on display at the Harry M. Drake Gallery from April 1 to April 25. Her current works on display are of and inspired by bears. “Choosing the literal subject of bears was simply a means to continue my ongoing interest in like forms and the use of gesture within a confined and concentrated space. Over a lifetime, bears have periodically found their way into my repertoire, as have dogs, dugongs, birds and stingrays,” Nash said. Simply put, she hopes viewers experience pleasure from viewing her work.

Her sensory attraction to certain materials, shapes, dynamics, and ideas inspires her to create for the sake of creation. She’s comfortable with the chaos of her artistic intuition and harnesses it with her focused, zealous dedication to seeing her visions come to fruition. Nash loves what she does both inside and outside of the classroom.

Her tip for you? Do what you love. “It’s the key to transcendence,” she said.
