DIY Peppermint Bark
Baking is a great way to bond with friends and family. If you want a new recipe to try, here’s how to make homemade peppermint bark.
In order to start, you will need:
- 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 12 oz white chocolate chips
- ½ tsp peppermint extract
- 10 crushed candy canes
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Next, put 3 inches of water into a large pot and bring to simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, and then place a heatproof bowl on top of the pot to create a double boiler. Then add the semi-sweet chocolate chips into the bowl and stir occasionally until the chocolate has melted; be sure to not burn the chocolate. From here, stir in your peppermint extract. Next, pour the chocolatey goodness into the prepared baking sheet and spread it into an even layer with an offset spatula. Refrigerate until the chocolate is firm, which should take about 20 minutes.
While waiting for the first layer of chocolate to set, prepare your candy canes. First, unwrap the candy canes and place them into a plastic Ziploc bag. Then, cover the plastic bag with a towel so the bag doesn’t rip and crush candy canes with a hammer or anything heavy enough to crush the candy canes until they are crushed to your desire.
Once the chocolate is done setting and the candy canes have been prepared it is time to move on. Using the same pot as before, place another large heatproof bowl and reheat again bringing the water to a simmer. Add in white chocolate chips and stir until melted, again making sure to be careful and not burn the chocolate. Pour the white chocolate over set semi-sweet chocolate. Make sure to do this step fast so you don’t melt the chocolate underneath and spread the chocolate evenly. Then top immediately with candy canes. Refrigerate until firm, about 20 minutes.
Finally, you are ready to crack the peppermint bark and enjoy.
