Armed with his car keys and Halloween candy, sophomore Brooks Geiger dedicated two hours to give back to the community on Oct. 13. One of 28 cars lined up for the Trunk or Treat celebration, Geiger decorated his with a blow-up pumpkin that proved very popular among participants.
“We ran out of candy about an hour in and had to run to Walgreens to get more for the kids,” he said.
Trunk or Treat was a service opportunity that SPA offered this past fall, particularly for LS students. For Geiger, contributing to the collective joy of this event was a meaningful experience.
His time giving out candy accounted for a fifth of all sophomores’ required 10 service hours.
“I decided trunk or treat would be a fun way of getting some of my service hours done and also a way to give back to the community,” Geiger said.
Exchanging candy with younger Spartans, Geiger received a lesson in return.
“I have learned that sometimes giving something to people can feel just as good as receiving,” he said.
For Geiger, the Trunk or Treat was a way of giving back to the community that proved both a learning experience and a joyful one.
