Singers Nelly Furtado and K’naan perform at We Day Toronto in 2012, one of the many events around the world. “I’m excited to hear from the great speakers, watch the fun performances, and hopefully meet kids from other Minnesota schools,” sophomore Lexi Hilton, who will attend We Day Minnesota, said.

Community Action student group members will be among the first to attend We Day Minnesota. Twenty eight St. Paul Academy and Summit School Upper School students are attending this event hoping to learn, inspire, and motivate to make a change.

We Day includes entertainers, speakers, and educators who help to empower youth and promote local and global change. The goal of We Day is to “get more involved in our community and look at service as an opportunity, not a chore,” co-President of Community Action Alex Miller said. We Day is held in cities all across the United States and Canada and is put on by the Canadian “Free the Children” charity. Miller hopes to “leave a legacy of our school being active in service” by attending the event this year.

Celebrities including The Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, Mark Dayton, the Minnesota Vikings, Jack Jablonski, and a host of others will be speaking, singing, motivating, and inspiring the students in attendance. These celebrities hope to “persuade teens to do service both locally and globally,” Miller explained.

Sophomore Lexi Hilton hopes to “learn about more service opportunities, and get inspired to make a change in my community.” Hilton, a Community Action member, also said, “I’m excited to hear from the great speakers, watch the fun performances, and hopefully meet kids from other Minnesota schools.” When talking about what she was looking forward to the most, she responded, “Demi Lovato. Definitely. I can’t wait to see her perform.” She also looks forward to attending the first ever We Day Minnesota.

The event will take place on Tuesday Oct. 8 at the Xcel Energy Center. An estimated 18,000 students will be in attendance from schools all over the Midwest. To read a story about We Day after the event, check out the October print issue of The Rubicon when it hits stands later this month.
