The winter wind blows frigid, as ninth grader Miles Coates Cush surveys his surroundings. A hostile hill with only one way down. He puts on his goggles and feels the wind inside his jacket. His hunger nourished with food he cooked himself.
He begins.
He feels at home as his board slashes through powder. He is descending with increasing velocity. faster, faster. His board makes incisions into the hillside. The jump is of paramount importance. He increases his speed even more.
Terminal velocity. Suddenly he is airborne.
The word “Burton” visible across the underside of his board. The wind rifling past him, no longer bound by gravity, he lets out a holler of joy and descends back to earth. Wishing maybe he didn’t have to.
Miles will return home, to his sister who he adores. He will cook food that he loves. And then he will be back on the hill. Ready to defy gravity once again.
