This summer you may have noticed a bright neon green album with the word “brat” on the center of it. On June 7th 2024, the world was struck with the 15 song album called Brat, released by pop artist Charli XCX. Charli XCX is a widely known music artist with her vast releases in music genres including pop and its subgenres, notably electropop. Brat explores themes of womanhood, insecurity, and friendship. The combination of personal themes and futuristic production made for the high-energy and entertaining album we have today.

The pop album grew widely on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, with many loving the idea of “Brat Summer” and trying to achieve that lifestyle. Specifically, the song “Apple” was a main factor of growing the album on social media. The song has a catchy beat making it the perfect sound for a dance. The addictive track had over 1 million posts of people dancing and having fun to the song.

With the rise of brat summer, most people would ask “what is Brat?” And “how do I have a “Brat Summer?””

Another top hit from the album was the single “360”. This song was monumental this summer, with catchy lines and refrains like “so Julia”, where Charli compares herself to star actress and model Julia Fox. The track encapsulated a lot of the album’s themes, signifying confidence and not being perfect. Through nearly 200 million Spotify streams and being spread through TikTok, the song helped growthe idea of “Brat Summer”.

Brat culture prides itself on embracing your true self. Differing from your typical clean girl, Brat is being messy and a “party girl”. Having a “Brat Summer” means praising the good and the bad things that happen in life, embracing your small imperfections. This message spoke to many, encouraging everyone to show their true selves, the good and the bad, and have a “Brat Summer”.

With the summer coming to an end, and “Brat Summer” with it, the biggest takeaway from the global phenomenon is to be yourself and embrace the things that may not be perfect.
