International Women’s day is a day to celebrate and empower females, this year it fell on Mar. 8th. To celebrate, students got together in various ways during the week. On Tuesday, Mar. 4, the student-led affinity group HerSpace met during X-Period to celebrate International Women’s Day. Female-identifying students met in the design lab to make stickers for the members in celebration of international women’s day.

Affinity groups are designed for students to find common qualities between them. “I think being able to just come together as a community and connect as women is important, especially because it is such a hard time to be a woman in America right now.” Annesa Herzi said.

Lots of time and effort is put into every one of these meetings, and each affinity club leader takes on all of the planning and responsibility for the year. However, many affinity group leaders have been members for a long time before their position of leadership. “I was able to find a space to have opportunities to have the important conversations and sense of community throughout middle and high school that I probably wouldn’t have had without HerSpace.” Senior group leader Georgia Ross said.

9th grade Lucy Lowman feels that representation is important in the community. “International Women’s Day makes me feel empowered and included in the community.” She said.

International Women’s day allows for female identifying people to connect with each other on common ground, and opens up opportunities for discussion. By holding these meetings and putting an emphasis on female representation around the school, these stickers are a reminder that nobody is alone in their journeys.
