In yet another penalty shootout win, the Spartans came out on top to advance to the state championship game. The game remained relatively quiet until the end of the second half, when BVS began to challenge opponent Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa (PIZM) with many dangerous attacks, but nonetheless were still held scoreless through all of regulation and both halves of overtime. In a dramatic finish, the Spartans were able to rally and win in penalties 4-3 due to PIZM missing two of their five penalty shots, and SPA capitalizing on all but one of theirs. This win sends BVS to the state final, giving the team an opportunity to make history as the first-ever SPA soccer team and second-ever MN high school soccer team to win back-to-back-to-back state titles.
