On Dec. 11, the boys basketball team took on the Highland Scots at Highland Park High School for their third game of the regular season, resulting in a 54-80 loss for the Spartans.
Following a historic section finals appearance last season, the boys have struggled to keep the momentum into this year, and they are starting the season off with an 0-3 record. Despite this setback, the team put up a good effort against the Scots on Saturday.
In the first half, the Spartan’s defense was particularly impressive. The backcourt’s strong play caused many turnovers, which turned into offensive possessions for the boys. Unfortunately, the offense was where the Spartans faltered, and the team’s well set-up scoring opportunities turned into rebounds and possessions for the Scots. The period ended with the Spartans down 26-45, however, three pointers from junior Will Bogdan and senior Nathan Rock left some hope for the game’s second half.
Early in the second half, the boys looked revitalized. Rock, who’s averaging the team’s second highest points per game at 13.4, lead the team’s offense with his ability to maneuver around the Scot’s defense. Behind him in scoring were sophomore John Grimsrud and junior Bokii Mullataa, who’s successful free throws gave the team desperately needed points. The second period also saw the team substitute in senior Oliver Thompson, who came off the bench with equally impressive offensive efforts, which gave the frontcourt some much needed late-game drive.
Regardless of the second period’s much closer 28-35 scoreline, the Scots consistent play on both sides of the court proved impenetrable for the Spartans. Since their game against Highland, SPA’s two consecutive wins (versus Christ Household of Faith and Minneapolis Roosevelt) have bolstered their record to 2-3, providing optimism for the team as they push forward through the regular season.
The boys face Park Of Cottage Grove on Friday, Dec. 27 at 10 am.
