Baseball captains excited for the upcoming season and captains practices
Spartan baseball has started captain’s practices in preparation for the spring season. As expected, there have been complications this season due to COVID-19, but even with changes, such as the requirement of masks, captains’ practices have started on the regular calendar. After the cancellation of last year’s season, captains Bobby Verhey, Levi Mellin, and Boden Strafelda hope to lead the Spartans to a successful season amid the pandemic.
“Captains practices started two weeks ago. They are taking place inside a facility so we don’t have to be out in the cold,” Strafelda said. These practices allow the team to prepare for the season amid the cold weather and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mellin, who plans the practices with fellow captains, said, “At captains practices, we do a mix of hitting, throwing, and fielding drills.”
This mix of drills allows every player to hone and develop their skills and bond with the team before the season begins.
When talking about the team culture after just a few practices, Strafelda said, “Everyone loves being together and it’s a good time all around. We support one another on the field and in school.”
This supportive environment creates a culture of positivity and winning for the upcoming season.
“It’s looking like we have a solid program this year. We have been growing this team for the past four years, and I’m excited to see what we can do,” said Mellin. The captain’s practices have shown the potential that the team has for the spring season. Since last year’s season was canceled due to COVID-19, the team is especially eager for success after a 2-year break.
Although the baseball team just started their captain’s practices, the season is just around the corner, and the team will continue to prepare for the sudden start. The season opener is scheduled for Apr. 12 at 4:30 at home against rival Mounds Park Academy.
