Every time we are faced with a choice, the different outcomes result in different futures. Some choices lead to greater changes in life. Imagine each choice as a fork in the road. Sometimes the deviation between the two paths is incredibly small and ultimately don’t change your life’s path, but other times the crossroads can be complete opposites of each other. One option can lead you to a wonderful and prosperous life while the other leads you down a path of ruins. But very rarely are the choices so black and white, and oftentimes there are more than just two options to choose from. Each path brings about new choices, new decisions.
What if that one time in middle school you had saved the $40 you received on your birthday instead of spending it? You might be able to purchase that new pair of headphones you now want. Or what if instead of giving up on soccer after only taking it for two years, you had followed through and practiced consistently? You might have become the best player in school. The problem is, you’ll never know now. With every choice, you’re leaving one opportunity for a different alternative, but you never know if its always for better or for worse. The choices we make are almost always gambles.
What if an alternate universe existed for every possible outcome of your life; a universe where you are a billionaire night-time vigilante (Batman), or one where you are married to Beyonce but lived a humble life in the suburbs of Ohio? You currently exist in a reality where you are reading this right now. Every action and every choice you have ever made has led you to this point (for better or worse). But who’s to say there isn’t another “reality” where you are skydiving. This all begs the question: is reality really real? Or maybe all of that is just nonsense and our lives have already been predetermined and we really don’t have freedom and are instead given the illusion that we have some control in our life. Either way, what is our purpose in life? We were thrown into this world and we were given the power of free will. Now what?
