Upper School PE teacher Cari Jo Anderson holds up the required waiver to participate in the 5K. “The goal of the race is to promote healthy active lifestyles; to broadcast that physical education is educating students on how to live a healthy lifestyle and to have fitness as a fun, inclusive community event,” Anderson said.

Making fitness a part of student’s lives outside of just the class itself is an integral goal of the Fitness for Life program at St. Paul Academy and Summit School. This year, SPA is hosting a 5k Fun Run/Walk to emphasize this goal and encourage a lifelong commitment to fitness and health. “The race will start at 9 and depending on how fast the walkers and runners finish it is set to end around noon. There will be shirt sales and hopefully some music to make it a more fun and relaxed atmosphere,” Anderson said.

Training for the event varies, depending on one’s level of fitness. The app C25K is a good option for beginners.  “There is an app that is scientifically proven to be really effective for beginner runners, which it what I am utilizing in class- start from the bottom and work your way up.” Anderson said.

Fitness for Life students are required to participate, but anyone else who is part of the SPA community is invited to take part in the race. “Family, faculty, staff, the whole student body [can participate]- I have a lot of lower school students signed up, and also middle school and upper school students,” Anderson said.

For those people who are not interested in running, there are also volunteer opportunities at the event. The event will be held on May 14 on the SPA Randolph Campus.

To sign up, students must fill out a google form (http://goo.gl/forms/8PTxcZgPUa) and fill out a waiver that is outside Anderson’s office.
